Shweta Bachchan has revealed the secret to her parents’ — Amitabh and Jaya — great skin.

Shweta said the Bachchan family has incorporated mustard oil into their wellness routines. “So, I am really scared of needles. I would love to get lots of jobs done, but I am just so scared of the needles and the pain that I don’t know if I will be able to. Therefore, my only option is to really work hard at it (taking care of the skin). I also feel that 80 per cent of your skin is genetics and diet. And my parents (Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan) have great skin,” Shweta said on Mira Kapoor’s YouTube series ‘Skin & Within.’

She added, “I think the only common thing they both have is mustard oil. My mum eats a lot of her fish and everything… and Bengalis use mustard oil. My dad uses it (mustard oil) on his face and body. They have never touched their faces (had cosmetic treatments and procedures done), and I think for 81 and 76, they have very good skin.”

Taking a cue, we reached out to Dr Rinky Kapoor, consultant dermatologist at The Esthetic Clinics, to learn more about the benefits of mustard oil for skin. “Mustard oil is thought to improve complexion, help with fine lines, and improve skin elasticity,” she told indianexpress.com, adding that some believe it promotes better blood circulation and can even assist in managing dark circles under the eyes.

Mustard oil also supports renewing skin cells. “Many also rely on mustard oil for treating chapped lips and wrinkles,” says Dr Kapoor, highlighting its traditional uses. However, while these benefits sound promising, there is no substantial scientific evidence to back up the claims that mustard oil directly contributes to achieving great skin.

“It is important to remember that just because mustard oil is believed to help, does not mean it’s proven to work on the skin,” warns Dr Kapoor.

Should everyone use mustard oil?

While the list of believed benefits may sound appealing, Dr Kapoor advises caution. “It is better for everyone to avoid using mustard oil on the skin. Following trends or viral posts on social media can be risky,” she says. Many home remedies, including mustard oil, have not undergone extensive research to prove their efficacy or safety for skin care. Although mustard oil may have worked for some, its results vary from person to person. Dr Kapoor emphasizes, “It is not right to use any oil without knowing how it reacts on your skin.”

Moreover, mustard oil can lead to side effects such as allergic reactions, inflammation, burning, redness, and a tingling sensation. According to Dr Kapoor, these adverse reactions make mustard oil a risky option for regular skin care. “Using mustard oil on the skin can trigger these issues, and it’s not worth taking that chance,” she advises.
