Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, and Diana Spencer, the Duchess of Wales, came under an intense spotlight in the late 1900s during their respective tumultuous marriages to Queen Elizabeth’s sons — Prince Andrew and then-Princes Charles. As a result, the two women were always pitted against each other, and comparisons often found their way to the media.
In the latest episode of her podcast, Tea Talks with the Duchess and Sarah, Ferguson revealed how her recent diagnosis with breast cancer and successful mastectomy helped her let go of these comparisons to the late princess.
She opened up about how she had to have “a body part cut off” to “wake up”. “Not because of seeing death, but waking up to stop worrying, stop self-hatred, stop self-doubt, stop all these things. Stop not liking yourself, really, please, honestly,” she told co-host Sarah Thomson.
“Does it take that?… Yes, it did in my case. Honestly, it was so lucky. When I look back, [I think] OK. I’ve got good legs and look good. [I] didn’t like myself and that was because I think I was always compared to Diana and I think at the end I sort of believed my own press which is not too good,” she added.
She also expressed her luck in having her sister send her to have the mammogram which helped in early cancer diagnosis. “I’m very, very lucky. The greatest luck of my life has been to have a wonderful sister,” Ferguson said.
Further in the conversation, she reiterated how she now has “an enormous scar” but she likes herself a lot. “You’ve got a badge of office, you just are what you are… which of course was the last thing the Queen said to me: ‘Just be yourself, Sarah.’ And she saw it. She just got so annoyed when I wasn’t being myself. And that’s probably when I got into all the pickles. But now I am myself and I’m just so lucky to be able to be myself,” she said.
Sarah recently paid homage to Princess Diana on her 26th death anniversary with a throwback photo of the duo. “We miss you each day dearest friend. ❤️,” she captioned the post.
