Raksha Bandhan 2023 Muhurat Time: Rakshabandhan, a cherished festival that celebrates the unique bond between brothers and sisters, is celebrated with much fervour every year. On this day, sisters tie colourful threads, known as ‘rakhis’, around their brother’s wrists. In return, brothers offer gifts and promise to care for and protect their sisters.

As per the Hindu lunar calendar, the festival is celebrated in the month of Shravana (on a full moon day), which typically falls in August. This year, according to Pandit Jagannath Guruji, this special day falls on both August 30 and 31. As such, this has made some people unsure about which of these days is the actual Raksha Bandhan day.

According to Drik Panchang, Raksha Bandhan will be observed on August 30. “However, there is a period of time called Bhadra Kaal on that day, from 5:30 pm to 9:01 pm. During this time, it is not considered auspicious to tie a rakhi. So, if you want to avoid Bhadra Kaal, you can tie the Rakhi on August 30 after 09:01 PM,” Pandit Ji said.

He added that the full moon day starts at 10:58 am on August 30 and ends at 7:05 am on August 31. “So, you can also celebrate Raksha Bandhan on August 31, the whole day until 5:42 pm.”

Pandit Ji shared the reasons behind the confusion around the date of Raksha Bandhan:

*The shifting lunar calendar: The full moon day changes every year because the lunar calendar is based on the cycles of the moon.

*The use of different Hindu calendars: There are many different Hindu calendars, and they all have different ways of calculating the date of the full moon day. This can lead to a difference of one or two days in the date of Raksha Bandhan.

No matter which day you celebrate this auspicious festival, remember to thoroughly enjoy the festivities and cherish the unbreakable bond you share with your siblings. Speaking of the festival’s origins, there are several mythological stories that are connected to it.

One of them is about the bond of trust between King Bali and Goddess Lakshmi. It is believed that King Bali confined Vishnu in his house after defeating him thrice. But Lakshmi, to get her husband back, tied a thread around King Bali’s wrist and in return asked him to mark this bond of compassion and faith. King Bali couldn’t refuse and was forced to send Lord Vishnu to her.

According to another story, Lord Krishna once cut his finger while flying a kite. Seeing blood coming out of his finger, Draupadi ran to help and tore a piece of cloth from her sari and tied it to his bleeding finger. Lord Krishna was extremely pleased by her gesture and promised to protect her from all evil thereafter. Later, as is known, he protected her from the Kauravas.
