The much-anticipated Netflix documentary Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale premiered on November 18, 2024, offering fans a glimpse into the life of Nayanthara, South India’s ‘Lady Superstar.’  It portrays the actress’ transformation from a starlet to a pan-Indian superstar and dives into her relationship with Vignesh Shivan. However, its release has been overshadowed by a heated controversy involving actor and producer Dhanush.

The dispute centers around a three-second behind-the-scenes (BTS) clip from the 2015 film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan, which appeared in the documentary’s trailer. Dhanush, the film’s producer, issued a legal notice to Nayanthara and Netflix, demanding Rs 10 crore in damages for alleged copyright infringement.

In response, Nayanthara shared an open letter on Instagram, accusing Dhanush of an “all-time low” and alleging that his refusal to grant a No Objection Certificate (NOC) had already delayed the documentary’s release.

She further stated, “What’s even more shocking is your legal notice after the release of the trailer of the Netflix Documentary. We were startled to read those lines wherein you questioned the usage of some videos (just 3 seconds) which were shot in our personal devices and that too BTS visuals that are already very much publicly present on social media and claimed a sum of Rs 10 crores as damages for the mere 3 seconds.”

Days after sharing this post, Dhanush’s lawyer released a statement in response, which read: “Advice your client to take down the content infringing my client’s copyright over the film NAANUM ROWDY DHAAN by using the same in your client’s documentary named NAYANTHARA BEYOND THE FAIRYTALE within 24 hours, failing which my client will be forced to initiate appropriate legal action, including but not limited to seeking damages to a sum of Rs 10 crores against your client and Netflix India.”

Despite this controversy, the documentary, released on Nayanthara’s 40th birthday, has been well-received, with fans praising its candid portrayal of her and her relationship with her director husband.

How did Nayanthara’s and Vignesh meet?

Nayanthara and Vignesh Shivan first met in 2015 during the filming of Naanum Rowdy Dhaan. While Vignesh was the director, Nayanthara starred as the lead. Their connection deepened as they worked together, and the duo soon started dating and wed in 2022.

Netflix released a clip of the actor recalling her feelings when they first met. “We were filming on the roads of Pondicherry, and I was waiting for my shot. I saw Wikki talking about a scene with Vijay Sethupathi sir. For some strange reason, I looked at him differently that day,” she said, adding, “The first thing I thought was that he is a cute guy.”

She talked about noticing how he was explaining things to the cast and crew and his dedication as a filmmaker. Vignesh Shivan added, “After finishing the shoot, she sent a text saying ‘I miss being on sets’. I said, ‘Same here, ma’am.’”
