Kartik Purnima 2023 Start and End Date: A popular festival celebrated by the Hindu and Jain community, Kartik Purnima is known as Dev Deepavali, Tripuri Purnima and Tripurari Purnima. It is celebrated on the 15th lunar day in the month of Kartik and is widely celebrated across India.
Legend has it that the name of the day comes from Tripurari, an enemy of Tripurasura, the ogre. Tripurari, another form of God Shiva, had killed Tripurasura on Kartik Purnima.
It is said that Tripurasuraha is a collective name given to three demons namely Vidyunmali, Tarakaksha, and Viryavana who controlled the whole world after defeating the gods and created three cities in space, Tripura. So, on this day, it is believed that Lord Shiva had killed the demons with a single arrow. Therefore, the day is celebrated as a festival of illumination, thus known as Dev-Deepavali or Diwali for the gods.
Another legend has it that it is the day of Matsya, or the fish-incarnation of Lord Vishnu, as well as the birth date of Vrinda, the personification of Tulsi. It is said that Lord Kartikeya, the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, was born on this day. Devotees of Radha and Krishna also believe that on Kartik Purnima, the gods had danced.
People donate lamps and recite Vedic mantras and bhajans. They also light lamps just like Diwali to symbolise the virtue of goodness.
