Step aside, dog lovers. August 8 is celebrated as International Cat Day every year, honouring one of man’s most common and ancient companions. It is observed annually to create awareness about caring and protecting these little beings.

The day was established back in 2002 by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) to create awareness about the plight of cats globally and how they make the world a better place. On this special occasion, we have compiled a list of the most expensive cat breeds in the world (in case you have a lot of money to spare and need a pet friend). Check out the list below.

Egyptian Mau

Considered one of the oldest natural breeds of cats, the Egyptian Mau is a breed of domestic cats. Known for their distinctive “mau” (cat) markings usually black or silver glossy coats, they are one of the most athletic cats. They are also one of the most trainable cat breeds, recognised for their intelligence, affectionate nature, and loyalty to their owners. Their hunting skills are also superior, just in case you’re facing rat issues at home. They cost anything between $900 to $1600 (approximately Rs 75,000 to Rs 1,35,000).

Siberian Forest

Also known as “Siberian”, this domestic cat breed originated in Russia. They have soft, fluffy coats and come in various colours — black, white, red, and tabby. These friendly cats are also known for their playful and curious nature. Their cost ranges from $600 to $2000 (approximately Rs 50,000 to Rs 1,65,000).

Scottish Fold

Scottish Fold cats are not as common as other breeds, thereby driving up their price. One of the fluffiest cats, they are distinguished by their unique folded ears, giving an ‘owl-like’ appearance. With a wide variety of coat colours and patterns, they can have both short and long hair. Their cost varies between $800-$2000 (approximately Rs 66,000 to Rs 1,65,000).

Bengal

Characterised by its distinct, wild-looking coat, this domestic cat breed is known for its energetic and playful natue. With a coat covered by spots, rosettes, or marbled patterns, they make for great pets.

Costing anything between $1800 to $3000 (approximately Rs 150,000 to Rs 2,50,000), they are considered expensive due to the cost of breeding requires specific genetic combinations and can be a complex process. This purebred cat is known for its unique appearance — making it more expensive.

Khao Manee

This rare, ancient breed from Thailand has a distinctive, pure white coat and bright, piercing blue eyes. Their intelligent and affectionate personalities make them easy to train.

Earlier, it was considered a royal cat in Thailand as only the Thai royal family and noblemen had them as pets. Their rarity also contributes to the higher cost with prices rising up to $11,000 (over Rs 9 lakh). They also symbolise good luck and prosperity, according to folklore.

They also have a unique appearance with striking spots, big ears and long slender bodies that makes them highly sought after by cat enthusiasts.
