Kaustabh Modak.
How did you end up in Kolkata? How long have you been here?
I’m from Nagpur and after spending four years pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering at IIT Kanpur, I am currently working in Kolkata as an assistant manager at ITC Limited. I was hired by the company through campus placement and this was the posting and the role I was offered.
Did you like the city when you first came here?
Yes, I liked Kolkata when I first came here five months ago. I live in the Park Street area, arguably the most vibrant part of the city. I really liked the overall environment of the city.
What kind of problems did you face when you first shifted here? Do you enjoy big city life?
I never faced too many issues. One thing with Kolkata which bothers many people is the unhygienic conditions on the roads and in the city, in general. I was not used to seeing people as impoverished — literally sleeping on the streets — and that came as a cultural shock to me.
What do you miss about Nagpur?
I miss the peaceful life I had in Nagpur. There was much less traffic on the roads, less people on the sidewalks and fresher air to breathe. Life isn’t as hectic in small cities as it is here.
Was language a problem?
No, language was never a problem. Everyone communicates pretty well in Hindi/English around here. People are not really adamant about using the native tongue here as much as they are elsewhere.
