Garlic is a potent superfood and a favourite in cuisines across the globe. The bulbous vegetable, bursting with flavour, has been known for its many nutritional benefits. It helps improve immunity, lower the risks of heart diseases and regulates blood sugar levels.

Lately, many content creators are sharing videos suggesting chewing garlic cloves is the key to clear, acne-free skin. Digital creator and dermatologist Dr Andrea Suarez shared an Instagram reel saying, “The most bioactive compound in garlic is Allicin. It is formed and released when the garlic clove is crushed. Can garlic consumption cure acne? What is the ideal amount of consumption?

“There is no scientific evidence to claim consuming garlic cloves can single-handedly reduce acne,” said Kuri. She also said that she would not recommed applying garlic topically on the skin. “Applying raw garlic on acne spots may lead to contact dermatitis and irritation,” she said.

What are the health benefits associated with garlic?

“Garlic’s components, like allicin and thiosulfinates, possess anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties. It is also an excellent immunity booster. Including garlic in your diet can offer multiple ancillary benefits, potentially aiding in maintaining clear skin,” she elaborated. However, she cautioned against specific daily consumption targets, as excessive intake may lead to heartburn, acidity, and persistent bad breath.

“Garlic that has aged and dehydrated slightly tends to be more potent in its health benefits,” she noted. She advised moderation in consumption and recommended consulting a dermatologist before applying garlic topically for acne treatment.
