Ameesha Patel, last seen on Gadar 2, recently spilled the beans on her skin and hair care routine. “I started very early with facials and clean-ups for acne. For night — night cream, night serum. When I am not working, I don’t use makeup at all. If I am out also, it is bare minimum. Even on screen, for me, less is more,” the 49-year-old said.
Expressing her love for “vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, and serums that have deep, nourishing properties,” Patel said on the BIEbanter with Queenie Singh show on Instagram, “What my skin type needs is hydration owing to the travel, makeup, flights, and air pressure. My skin gets dehydrated. So, I need something that is immensely nourishing. So, I read the ingredients.”
For her hair, Patel swears by regular massages and deep conditioning treatments. “Heat the oil a little and apply it for half an hour. I feel it has helped my hair as a kid. Applying egg helps to take out the oil more than the shampoo.”
Taking a cue from her admission, let’s understand how egg yolks can help remove excess oil from hair.
Aesthetic physician, cosmetologist, and skin expert Dr Karuna Malhotra from Cosmetic Skin and Homeo Clinic told indianexpress.com that it is due to egg yolks’ “unique composition.”
Lecithin in egg yolks: Egg yolks contain lecithin, a type of lipid with emulsifying properties. It helps break down and lift away oil, giving hair a less greasy feel. For this reason, Lecithin is used in some hair care products, as it can help lift oil and allow it to rinse out more quickly.

Proteins and fatty acids: According to Dr Malhotra, egg yolks are rich in proteins and fatty acids that nourish hair without adding excess oil. “These nutrients can strengthen the hair shaft and create a smooth finish, which might also reduce the amount of oil the scalp produces in response to dryness,” said Dr Malhotra.
Mildness compared to shampoo: Unlike shampoos that might strip the hair of natural oils and cause rebound oil production, “egg yolks have a gentler, conditioning effect.” “Doctors often recommend avoiding overly harsh shampoos if one’s scalp is naturally oily, and egg yolks can provide a balanced cleanse,” said Dr Malhotra.
While eggs can help with oil removal, they aren’t a replacement for a proper shampoo, especially for a deep cleanse or managing scalp conditions like dandruff. “I would suggest using eggs as an occasional alternative or supplement, not a primary cleaning method, as it can leave your hair dry and less moisturised with excess use,” said Dr Malhotra.
