Kajol got candid about ageing in a recent interview with Simply Amina, throwing light on visible signs on the face and what she does about them. “When people ask me how are you so beautiful even today, I tell them, the basic reason is, I feel, ‘age shows first in your eyes,’ In fact, boredom reflects first in your eyes,” she tells the host.

Taking her cue, we reached out to experts to understand the biology behind it and learn about signs to mitigate the effects of ageing on the skin.

Dr Ameesha Mahajan, Cosmetic Dermatologist & Founder, Eden Skin Clinic told indianexpress.com that Kajol’s quote — “Age shows first in your eyes” — is spot on. The delicate skin around the eyes is where ageing whispers before it shouts.

Here are some detailed first signs of aging that the body shows –

1. Under-Eye Area – The under eye skin is very delicate and thin. On the top of it, constant movement makes the early appearance of fine lines, puffiness and dark circles.
2. Mouth Corners & Smile Lines – When the body gets devoid of collagen, it represents nasolabial folds or marionette lines.
3. Forehead & Between Brows – Repetitive movements lead to deepening of expression lines.
4. Neck & Décolletage – Often neglected in skincare but quick to reveal sagging and sun damage.
5. Hands – Thin skin + exposure to sun and water = prominent veins, wrinkles, and age spots.

Dr Archana Batra, dietitian nutritionist, physiotherapist and certified diabetes educator concurred, adding that as you approach 50, the body’s metabolism slows down, and there is a decrease in estrogen, among other hormonal changes. Here are some things that might help:

Supplements

Taking vitamins E and C can aid with proper hydration, which is important for enhancing skin suppleness and resilience. Sunflower seeds, almonds, and spinach are high in vitamin E, whereas bell peppers, broccoli, oranges, and tomatoes are rich in vitamins C.

Increase vitamin D and calcium consumption to three times each day. Foods like cereal, bread, and juice, that are enriched with both these crucial dietary components. Start on magnesium, omega 3 and vitamins B6, B9 and B12.

Keep blood pressure in check

High blood pressure may become a problem as you age. Getting rid of table salt is one step toward a heart-healthy diet. You can try spices like garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, pepper, citrus, and fresh herbs instead. You can also opt for sodium-free or low-sodium alternatives.

Physical activities

Start strength training at least 3 days a week. Make sure to get seven to nine hours of sleep, and make time for mental and emotional well being.

Some more practical strategies to delay aging – skincare edition

1. Never skip sunscreen, even indoors – UV exposure is the #1 accelerator of ageing, especially around the eyes and mouth. Use SPF 30+ daily.
2. Start an eye cream early, not late – Look for ingredients like peptides, niacinamide, caffeine, or retinol (in low concentration) to hydrate and firm.
3. Double cleanse, but never tug – Be gentle with your skin while removing makeup. Harsh rubbing breaks down collagen over time.
4. Hydration is your best friend – Dehydrated skin = more visible lines. Use hyaluronic acid-based serums and a good moisturizer with ceramides or squalane.

5. Antioxidants AM, Retinoids PM – Vitamin C in the morning protects against free radicals. Retinol or bakuchiol at night helps boost collagen and improve texture.
6. Over Usage of makeup wipes – They lead to skin damage, especially the under eye area, being too harsh.
7. Skipping sunglasses – squinting leads to crow’s feet
8. Sudden very low calorie diet (VLCD) – rapid weight loss can cause sagging
