Holi, the festival of colours, is more than just a celebration of togetherness  — it’s a sensory experience that can uplift moods and energise spirits. The vibrant hues of gulaal, from bright yellows to deep blues, do more than just add to the festivities; they have a profound impact on emotions and psychology. Colours have long been associated with different moods, and Holi provides the perfect canvas to observe their effects.

Have you ever wondered why red feels energising, while blue brings a sense of calm? Or why yellow is linked to happiness and positivity? The psychology of colours plays a subtle yet powerful role in how we feel, interact, and even perceive our surroundings. But how exactly do Holi’s colours influence mood and energy, and is there scientific reasoning behind these effects?

How different colours psychologically influence emotions and energy levels

Neha Cadabam, senior psychologist and executive director at Cadabams Hospitals, tells indianexpress.com, “Colours have a profound impact on our psychological state, subtly shaping our emotions and energy levels. For example, warm hues like red, orange, and yellow are typically associated with energy, passion, and warmth, often evoking excitement and stimulation. In contrast, cooler shades such as blue and green promote calmness and relaxation. During a festival like Holi, the deliberate use of vibrant colours celebrates cultural heritage and stimulates emotional responses that enhance social bonding and self-expression. The dynamic interplay of these colours can uplift spirits, create a festive atmosphere, and even boost overall energy by engaging multiple sensory pathways.”

Can exposure to bright colours like those in Holi improve mental well-being or reduce stress?

Exposure to bright, vivid colours can indeed have a positive impact on mental well-being. “Research suggests that such colours may help alleviate stress and improve mood by triggering the release of neurotransmitters like dopamine, which are associated with pleasure and reward. The sensory stimulation provided by a colourful environment can distract from daily stressors, promote a sense of joy, and even encourage creativity,” states Cadabam.

In the context of Holi, she mentions that the collective experience of sharing and celebrating amidst a burst of colours can foster a sense of community and belonging, which are crucial for psychological resilience. However, it is important to note that individual responses to colour can vary, and what is uplifting for one person might be less so for another.

Are there cultural or biological reasons why certain colours evoke specific emotional responses?

Both cultural and biological factors play significant roles in shaping our responses to different colours. Biologically, humans are wired to react to certain wavelengths of light, which may explain why colours like red can evoke a sense of urgency or excitement — a trait that historically signalled important environmental cues. Culturally, colours carry specific meanings and symbolism passed down through generations.

“For instance, in many Indian traditions, red is often associated with prosperity and auspiciousness, while green might symbolise growth and harmony. Holi amplifies these cultural narratives, using colours not only as a visual feast but also as a medium for expressing deep-seated emotions and communal values. Together, these biological instincts and cultural associations create a rich tapestry of emotional responses that explain why colours can be so powerful in influencing mood and energy,” concludes the expert.
