In our fast-paced lives and constantly busy routines, where time seems to slip away from us, we often find ourselves rushing through even the simplest of activities, including our walks. Breaking this pattern is World Sauntering Day — celebrated on June 19 every year — which encourages people around the world to slow down their pace and enjoy a leisurely stroll. With the concept of sauntering rooted in the art of taking a casual walk, this day aims to remind everyone to take a pause from their busy routine, embrace a more relaxed pace, and immerse themselves in the present moment.
Reportedly, this holiday was created in 1979 by WT Rabe in response to the growing popularity of jogging. The origin of the day is believed to be traced back to the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island in Michigan, USA, where Rabe worked.
Explaining the concept, Dr Nishant Gemini, HOD, Physiotherapy, Primus Super Speciality Hospital said, “Sauntering refers to a leisurely, relaxed walking pace or style. It involves strolling at a comfortable speed, without any particular destination or time constraint, and allowing oneself to fully engage with the surroundings.”
According to the expert, sauntering offers various benefits for mental and physical health. “Mentally, it promotes relaxation, reduces stress, and enhances mindfulness by encouraging one to be fully present in the moment,” Dr Gemini said.
As for physical health, sauntering provides a low-impact form of exercise, improves cardiovascular health, and can contribute to weight management. “It also allows for increased exposure to nature and fresh air, which has been linked to improved mood and cognitive function,” the expert highlighted.
How to practice?
First and foremost, you need to choose a pleasant location like a park or a quiet neighbourhood and set aside dedicated time for leisurely walking. “Focus on the present moment, paying attention to the sights, sounds, and sensations around you. Allow yourself to wander without a specific goal in mind. Take deep breaths, relax your body, and let go of any racing thoughts or worries. Remember to enjoy the journey rather than rushing towards a destination,” he said.
