Why do some people have thinner, more translucent eyelids?

Thinner eyelids are often seen in individuals with low melanin levels, especially Caucasians, said Dr Supriya Sriganesh.

Recently, digital creator Dr. Dana Brems posted a video on Instagram demonstrating the movement of her eyeballs beneath her unusually thin eyelids. She mentioned how those with thin eyelids may struggle to fall asleep due to its translucency.

What causes some people to have such translucent or thin eyelids? To get a clearer understanding, indianexpress.com consulted an eye expert.

When shown the video, Dr Supriya Sriganesh, executive director at Nethradhama Super Speciality Eye Hospital, Bangalore, said that Brems really stretched the skin over their eyeball because of which it looked so apparent. She said, “In some people, a layer of the eyelid called the tarsal plate ends up being very thin. This is generally seen in Caucasian people who have really low melanin content in their skin. The translucency often extends beyond the eyelids to other structures under the skin.”

Dr Anita Sethi, principal director and head of ophthalmology at Max Super Speciality Centre, Panchsheel Park, Delhi, pointed out that thinner eyelids are also frequently seen in older individuals. “As we age, the already thin skin of the eyelid loses elasticity and becomes stretched, leading to a droopy appearance known as ptosis,” she explained.

“Senile, or age related Ptosis, is more common in Caucasians or lighter skinned people. These people then need corrective surgery or Crutch glasses so that they can see,” she said.

Dr Sethi also noted another condition that can cause thinner eyelids: blepharochalasis, a type of allergic swelling that affects younger people. Repeated episodes of swelling can thin the skin, causing it to droop over the eye and impair vision.

How can you take care of your eyelids?

Given the fragility of the skin around the eyes, Dr Sriganesh advised handling it with care. “Avoid rubbing or tugging on the delicate eyelid area,” she said.

“You can also use protective measures like moisturiser and sunscreen and wear UV protection like glasses when you go out in bright sunlight. It’s important not to use makeup wipes as it is harsh and tugs on the sensitive skin around the eyes,” she advised.

“Also, if you are using serums and actives on the skin in the area surrounding your eyes, I’d suggest avoiding using it around the eyes as it is a slightly sensitive area,” she said.
