Bruising is commonly associated with injuries or accidents. However, many people may notice unexplained bruising on the legs, which can be a perplexing occurrence, raising questions about its origin and potential causes. “Usually, we get blotches or patches of blood clots under our skin when we injure that part or get a jab. But many times, you wake up in the morning or are going about your daily routine when suddenly someone notices an unusual patch or bruise on your skin and asks where you injured yourself — that is when you realise that nothing happened, so where did the patch come from,” Dr Prithviraj Deshmukh, Orthopaedic Surgeon, Orthobiologics Expert and Interventional Pain Management Specialist at Nexus Day Surgery Centre said.

Adding, Dr Ajay Kumar Gupta, Associate Director, Internal Medicine, Max Hospital, Vaishali said that unexplained bruising can occur to anybody, anytime. “Bruising means breaking of the capillaries within the skin causing the blood to ooze out of them leading to discolouration of the skin — which initially is red, then turns brown and disappears. Usually, they are self-limiting, non-serious and no treatment is required.”

But, why do they occur? Explaining the same, Dr Gupta shared that the cause can be anything that puts a strong impact on the skin, from a trivial trauma to being hit by an object while walking or an injury to the skin or the muscles. “There are some other conditions, like liver ailments, kidney ailments, bleeding disorders, vitamin deficiencies, autoimmune disorders like rheumatoid arthritis and lupus disease which can also cause such type of bruising,” he added.

Agreeing, Dr Anup Khatri, Consultant- Orthopedics, Global Hospital, Mumbai said that unknown causes of leg bruises include liver illness, dietary deficits, autoimmune problems, and other ailments. “Leg bruises can be caused by ageing or certain drugs. It may also happen if you have certain medical issues, such as vitamin deficits or bleeding disorders. It might be concerning to notice inexplicable bruises on your or your child’s legs, especially if you cannot recollect any incident that could have caused them. Bruises form when blood vessels under the skin are damaged. This injury causes blood vessels to leak, resulting in skin discolouration,” he said.

Dr Khatri listed the following conditions that might produce random bruises on the legs:

*Deficiencies in vitamins
*The illness of the liver
*Autoimmune diseases
*Thrombocytopenia
*Clotting and bleeding diseases are uncommon
*Cancers
*Sepsis

Experts further shared that unexplained bruising is quite common and impact almost everyone at some time in their lives. However, Dr Deshmukh said that you need to be concerned and consult a health expert if:

*A bruise increases in size over time
*A bruise doesn’t change within two weeks
*Bleeding can’t be stopped easily
*Severe pain or tenderness
*Severe or long-lasting nose bleeds
*Severe night sweats (that soak through your clothes)
*Unusually heavy periods or large blood clots in menstrual flow

Dr Gupta added that you can prevent unexplained bruising by preventing trauma or injury to the limbs, wearing a good-fit shoe, taking care of the vitamin deficiencies if any, getting treatment for chronic ailments of the liver and kidney or immune disorders or bleeding disorders, if any. However, it’s difficult to avoid bruising completely, especially if the cause is unknown, Dr Deshmukh said.

“Once it occurs, you can either apply ice packs or anti-clotting local ointments or wait for a couple of weeks for the bruise to subside,” he suggested.
