Lauki, commonly known as bottle gourd, is a staple in many culinary traditions and is widely appreciated for its health benefits. The vegetable has a moderately thick peel that protects the flesh inside. While it is typically peeled before cooking, have you ever wondered whether consuming the peel is safe? Indianexpress.com consulted experts to get clarity on the matter. Edwina Raj, head of services, clinical nutrition and dietetics at Aster CMI Hospital, Bengaluru, said that although bottle gourd (lauki ) is rich in nutrients and fibre, concerns about pesticide residues and the peel's texture are valid. "The peel is abundant in dietary fibre that supports digestion and helps maintain a sense of fullness, potentially aiding in weight control. It also offers antioxidants and essential vitamins that enhance overall health," she said. Agreeing with this, C V Aishwarya, a clinical nutritionist and lecturer at Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research, Chennai, said that bottle gourd (lauki) peel is safe to eat, provided it is fresh, properly cooked, and consumed in moderation. "The peel is a good source of dietary fibre, which supports digestion and gut health. It also contains polyphenols and flavonoids that help reduce oxidative stress and inflammation. Scientific studies have shown that lauki peel is rich in potassium and vitamin C. Its high fibre content can improve bowel movements and may help prevent constipation," she said. Precautions to keep in mind Aishwarya also said, "In rare cases, some individuals may experience allergic reactions to bottle gourd, which can lead to symptoms such as itching, swelling, or breathing difficulties. Excessive consumption of bottle gourd juice can dilute blood sodium levels, potentially causing weakness, confusion, or more severe health complications." To maximise safety, experts recommend washing the vegetable thoroughly under running water, scrubbing the peel gently, and opting for organic produce whenever possible.
