Sania Mirza talks about egg freezing (Photo: PR Handout)Former tennis player Sania Mirza recently revealed that she reached out to Farah Khan, a close friend, when she decided to freeze her eggs. “I wanted to freeze my eggs. And I reached out to you and you connected me with your doctor…Dr Firuza Parikh,” Sania said in a conversation with the filmmaker.
Speaking on her YouTube podcast Serving it Up with Sania, the sports star said, “Not many people know I have frozen my eggs. I recommend it to everybody because the biological clock is ticking. Suppose you want another kid or something. I had Izhaan naturally, and then I froze my eggs after that.”
Taking a cue from her candid revelation, let’s consider whether it is common to freeze eggs after naturally conceiving the first time, as Sania Mirza did.
Dr Richa Bharadwaj, consultant, obstetrics and gynaecology, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mumbai Central, concurred that it’s becoming more common for women to consider egg freezing even after having conceived naturally. “Many women today choose to delay their second pregnancy for their career, health, or personal reasons. Egg freezing gives them reproductive flexibility. It’s not just a good idea; it’s a thoughtful decision,” said Dr Bharadwaj.

While it used to be more common for women who hadn’t conceived yet, now we see many women coming forward after their first natural conception to preserve their fertility for the future, she added.
Is it medically advisable to freeze eggs after having a child naturally?
Absolutely, asserted Dr Bharadwaj. “A successful natural pregnancy doesn’t guarantee future fertility because egg count and quality decline with age. If a woman plans to have her next child in a few years, freezing eggs in her early 30s or soon after her first delivery helps secure the chance of another healthy pregnancy later. It’s a way to ‘bank’ her younger, healthier eggs before her ovarian reserve decreases,” said Dr Bharadwaj.
Till what age can women safely consider egg freezing?
According to Dr Bharadwaj, the best time is between 28 and 35 years of age, when eggs are at their healthiest. “After 35, while egg freezing is still an option, the chances of success drop. Before proceeding, it’s important to undergo tests like AMH and antral follicle count to check ovarian reserve and adjust the timing accordingly,” said Dr Bharadwaj.
What makes egg freezing a valuable option for modern women?
Dr Bharadwaj affirmed that egg freezing allows women to take control of their reproductive timeline. It provides emotional and biological reassurance that fertility won’t interfere with life plans. “With better freezing technology, success rates have increased, and eggs can maintain their quality for several years,” said Dr Bharadwaj.
What should women consider before opting for it?
Consulting a fertility specialist is crucial. Dr Bharadwaj stressed that it’s important to understand the process, expected success rates, and emotional aspects. “Keeping a healthy lifestyle, balanced nutrition, and managing stress can also improve outcomes. We’re seeing more women, including those who’ve conceived once, opting for egg freezing to preserve their fertility options. It’s a sign of empowerment and awareness, not medical urgency,” said Dr Bharadwaj.
