‘Morning people are more productive than night people,’ say Akshay Kumar-Twinkle Khanna while Saif Ali Khan-Kajol ‘heartily disagree’

Being a night owl or an early bird is subjective and influenced by genetics. The best choice is the one that aligns with your natural body clock and allows you to maintain a consistent sleep schedule.

Do you function better in the morning or at night? Our favourite Bollywood stars share their hot takes in the latest episode of Two Much, hosted by Twinkle Khanna and Kajol. “Morning people are more productive than night people,” said Khanna, while Kajol refuted her statement, saying she “heartily disagrees”. Akshay Kumar chimed in, and while pointing at Saif Ali Khan, said that he is not a morning person. “This show has begun in the morning at 10.30, we will be free soon,” he supported his wife’s claim.

“I would much rather produce in the morning and get the work done. But I don’t know if night people are less productive,” Khan commented, to which Khanna quipped, “produce or reproduce?” to lighten the tone of the argument.

Dr Navneet Sood, senior consultant, pulmonary and sleep medicine, at Delhi’s Dharamshila Narayana Superspeciality Hospital, said, “The preference between being a night owl or an early bird depends on individual circadian rhythms and lifestyle demands. Night owls tend to be more alert and productive in the evening, while early birds excel in the morning.”

Agreeing, Dr J Harikishan, senior general physician, Kamineni Hospitals, Hyderabad, said each chronotype, as it is scientifically known, comes with its own set of benefits and drawbacks. “Night owls and early birds represent two distinct chronotypes that dictate an individual’s natural preference for sleep and wake patterns. Night owls, also known as evening types or nocturnal individuals, find it easier to stay awake late into the night and often have difficulty waking up early in the morning,” he shared.

On the other hand, early birds, referred to as morning types, are more alert and productive during the early hours and typically go to bed earlier in the evening, Dr Harikishan added.

Dr Sood shared that being a night owl or an early bird is subjective and influenced by genetics. “The best choice is the one that aligns with your natural body clock and allows you to maintain a consistent sleep schedule,” he said.
