Breastfeeding is an intimate experience shared by a mother and her child. It is well known that it helps strengthen the bond between the two and allow them to fully embrace their love for each other. But is it possible that this bond could reach toxic levels of codependency? Can excessive breastfeeding cause the child to be extremely clingy towards the mother?

We are celebrating World Breastfeeding Week from 1st to 8th August and we will be discussing and debunking myths related to breastfeeding with the help of experts!

First, let’s see how breastfeeding acts as an emotional ribbon tying the mother and her child together. The formation of a unique bond between the mother and the child is supported by both emotional and biological factors. “When a mother breastfeeds, the body releases oxytocin, often called the ‘love hormone.’ This hormone fosters feelings of warmth, love, and attachment, helping mothers and babies feel calm and connected.” said Dr Ravneet Joshi, MD Paediatrics and lactation specialist.

Breastfeeding also contributes to lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol in infants. This enables the baby to have emotional stability as well as security which further solidifies the unique bond.

Can the baby’s dependency on the mother turn into clinginess?

It is a common misconception that breastfeeding can make the baby clingy. However it is far from the truth. “Rather than promoting clinginess, breastfeeding supports a balanced parasympathetic-sympathetic nervous system, which contributes to emotional stability and resilience.” said Dr Joshi. This means that not only does breastfeeding help in reinforcing a sense of security and stability for the baby, but it also helps nurture healthy independence for them in the future.

Can the baby’s bond with other family members (such as the father) be affected if the mother breastfeeds too much?

No, breastfeeding nurtures the baby’s emotional development and hence supports healthy relationships with everyone in the family. However, other family members are to establish strong bonds with the baby through interactions like holding, playing, and engaging in daily routines. “Skin-to-skin contact is particularly beneficial, as it helps regulate the baby’s body temperature, heart rate, and stress levels while promoting relaxation and security.” said Dr Joshi.

It is important to remember that every child is unique, and while some may seek more physical closeness, this is a normal part of development and not a sign of unhealthy dependence.
