The Centre would set up an AIIMS-like institution in West Bengal as part of the second phase of the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY),the Rajya Sabha was informed on Wednesday.
The state government has agreed to provide 100 acres of land and the implementation of the project will be taken up on selection of suitable land in consultation with the state government.
The institution will have a 960-bed hospital intended to provide healthcare facilities in 42 specialty/ super-specialty disciplines,Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said in a written reply.
Six AIIMS-like institutions are being taken up as part of the first phase of the PMMSY,one each at Bhopal,Bhubanesswar,Jodhpur,Patna,Raipur and Rishikesh.
Construction of a housing complex for these institutions has started and is expected to be complete by the end of 2010.
