Can the ocean really reduce stress?

Thalassotherapy is the practice of using seawater and marine elements for therapeutic purposes.

Third UN Ocean Conference: Opportunity to build consensusUnlock the ocean's power for relaxation and mental well-being! Explore Thalassotherapy, the science behind it (file)

The vastness of the ocean has a natural and powerful pull, not just for its beauty but for its ability to improve our mental well-being. Thalassotherapy, the practice of using seawater and marine elements for therapeutic purposes, offers a unique approach to relaxation and emotional renewal.

Mehezabin Dordi, Clinical Psychologist, Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital, Mumbai, shares her inputs.

“The ocean environment is a natural stress reliever,” she explains. “Seawater itself is rich in minerals, and some research suggests it may help lower cortisol levels, the body’s stress hormone.”

This combination creates a powerful trifecta for de-stressing and finding inner peace. The rhythmic sound of waves crashing against the shore creates a calming effect, while the buoyancy of water allows your muscles to relax.

Simply being in a natural environment has been shown to improve overall well-being and lift spirits. The ocean takes this a step further. Exposure to natural environments, including the ocean, has been linked to improvements in mood. The negative ions present in ocean air and seawater are believed to contribute to increased energy and a more positive outlook.

Just how effective is it?

“While there are some anecdotal and  empirical support for thalassotherapy, more rigorous scientific research is needed to fully establish its effectiveness. However, integrating elements of this therapy into broader wellness and mental health practices can potentially be quite beneficial for many clients. Spending time in natural settings has been shown to lower levels of anxiety and depression.” she adds.

The ‘biophilia’ hypothesis suggests that humans have an innate connection to nature, and interacting with natural environments can potentially enhance one’s mental health.

Nature therapy, also called ecotherapy, involves engaging with natural environments to promote mental health and well-being. The benefits of nature therapy are also quite well-documented.

Being in nature often involves physical activity, such as walking or hiking, which can improve physical health and, consequently, mental health. Nature therapy can lower stress levels by reducing cortisol and blood pressure. The tranquility and beauty of natural environments can create a sense of peace and reduce the effects of chronic stress.

Group activities, too,  in natural settings can enhance social bonds and provide a sense of community, which is beneficial for mental health.
