Winter is here, and so is the time to indulge in seasonal offerings. From fruits to vegetables, the colder months offer a world of fresh produce and its benefits, and the recent instalment of actor Bhagyashree’s ‘Tuesday Tips with B’ series explores the benefits of ‘amarphal’ or persimmon, a citrus fruit staple to Indian winter diets.

“This is what you need to enhance your vision, strengthen your hair, give glow to your skin & improve your heart health. An all in one solution is Amarphal or Persimmon.. a winter seasonal fruit. So do try and include this in your diet so that you have all of these in the new year,” she wrote in the caption of her Instagram post.

Benefits of amarphal

Kanikka Malhotra, consultant dietician and diabetes educator, told indianexpress.com that persimmons, also known as amarphal or khurma in Hindi, are famous for their sweet, honey-like flavour. These fruits are also considered nutritional powerhouses with the ability to benefit your overall health.

“Persimmons are particularly high in vitamin C, which helps boost the immune system and promotes healthy skin. They also contain vitamin A, important for vision and immune function, as well as vitamin E, an antioxidant that supports skin health. These fruits also provide dietary fibre, aiding in digestion and promoting a feeling of fullness,” she elaborated.

Beyond their tart and tangy taste, persimmons also offer a host of health benefits. Agreeing with Bhagyashree’s claims, Malhotra mentioned that the Vitamin A and antioxidants like lutein and zeaxanthin present in this fruit indeed help sharpen vision and protect the eyes from age-related macular degeneration.

“The vitamin C content helps boost the immune system by making the body resistant to infections. The high fibre content improves digestion and regulates bowel movement by keeping the gut healthy,” she said. It also reduces sugar spikes and helps in managing diabetes. Finally, Malhotra mentioned that the combination of fibre, antioxidants, and potassium regulates blood pressure and cholesterol levels, keeping the heart safe from sudden attacks.

How to include in diet

Malhotra hails persimmons as a versatile ingredient, enjoyable fresh as well as cooked. “Slice them in pieces, and have them as a part of salads, or as a topping in yoghurt parfaits, or just on their own. If you like to bake, they make for a wonderful addition to muffins, pies, jellies, puddings and other baked treats,” she said. In many parts of the world, dehydrated persimmons are a concentrated source of energy as well as a go-to snack, concluded the dietitian.
