Have you been gorging Fanta’s and cold coffees this monsoon like there’s no tomorrow? You need to stop consuming these cold beverages right now. According to Dr Somnath Gupta, Consultant Physician & Diabetologist, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad, taking chilled items during the monsoon can disturb the body’s balance and lead to a lot of health issues.
“The monsoon is peculiar, with high humidity levels yet cooler temperatures, which can already have an impact on the body’s internal balance. Cold foods can further increase these effects, leading to potential health problems,” he said.
Dr Prasad Kuvalekar, Consultant Physician Internal Medicine at DPU Private Super Speciality Hospital, Pune, explained that cold foods can serve as a nidus (the eye of the storm) for bacteria and viruses to grow fast.
According to Dr Akshay Anant Dhamne, Medicine and Physician Consultant, DPU Private Super Specialty Hospital, Pimpri, Pune, consumption of cold food and beverages during monsoon can also lead to stomach-related issues like bloating, dehydration and cramps along with common seasonal ailments like diarrhoea and viral infections. This is related to the nidus, Dr Kuvalekar referred to.
Dr Gupta attributed dyspepsia, and abdominal discomfort along with the weakening of the immune response leading to infections, to the consumption of cold foods and beverages. He added that these foods can also elevate respiratory symptoms, and infections in both the upper and lower respiratory tract.
It can also increase both arthralgia and arthritis, he said and cause worsening of allergic airway diseases like bronchial asthma, Dr Gupta said.
