The festive season is upon us, and it’s officially time for good food, quality time with friends and family, and making merry until dawn. This is also when many people tidy and decorate their houses and wear chef’s hats to create homemade delicacies using generational recipes.

Something similar was the case at Sharvari’s home. She recently took to Instagram to share a glimpse of chaklis being made at her home ahead of the festival of lights. “Woke up to the smell of chakli being made at home. Diwali has officially started! yay!” she captioned her story.

Celebrity chef Ananya Banerjee shared that chaklis are a popular Indian snack made primarily from rice flour, lentil paste, or gram flour, and a mix of spices, shaped into spirals and deep-fried to a crispy texture. They’re especially popular during Diwali and other festivals because they’re easy to make in large batches, stay fresh for days, and are perfect for sharing.

“Preparing snacks like chaklis is an age-old tradition for Diwali, rooted in the desire to offer homemade treats to guests, friends, and family during visits,” she told indianexpress.com.

How are they made?

Here’s a quick recipe for you to make chaklis at home:

  • In a mixing bowl, combine rice flour, gram flour/lentil paste, cumin seeds, sesame seeds, chili powder, turmeric, hing, and salt. Add melted butter or oil and mix well. Gradually add water to knead a smooth, non-sticky dough.
  • Fill a chakli maker with dough and press it into spiral shapes on a flat surface or directly into the oil.
  • Heat oil in a deep frying pan, then carefully slide in the shaped chaklis. Fry until golden brown and crispy.
  • Remove and drain on paper towels.
  • Once cooled, chaklis can be stored in an airtight container.
