I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! Ice creams are, undoubtedly, one of the most loved desserts worldwide. Whether it’s a classic vanilla cone, exotic fruit sorbet, or a creative fusion flavour, indulging in ice cream unites us, creating sweet moments of happiness that melt away any differences and bring smiles to faces everywhere.
Agreeing, Taste Atlas noted that in every corner of the world, you’ll find a delightful symphony of frozen treats, an array of creamy concoctions spun into existence by passionate artisans. “Frozen desserts, in their myriad forms, are a universal language of delight. Gelato, ice cream, and dondurma all offer a unique take on frozen desserts; gelato boasts a dense, creamy texture and intense flavours due to its slow churning process and low-fat content; ice cream is known for its higher fat content and airy, creamy texture, while dondurma, a Turkish delight, distinguishes itself with a stretchy, chewy consistency attributed to the addition of mastic and salep.”
With countless varieties of ice creams enjoyed across the world — each shaped by regional ingredients, techniques, and cultural influences — you might get spoilt for choices. But, worry not! Taste Atlas has curated a list of the 100 most iconic gelaterias and ice cream parlours that have left an indelible mark on the global dessert scene.
“It encompasses establishments that have honed their craft sometimes even over a century, serving time-honored flavours like chocolate and pistachio, or inventive combinations like ricotta and pear, sesame seeds and rice,” the food and travel guide shared.
Gelateria Vivoli from Florence, Italy, which has been a significant presence in Italy’s gelato scene for almost a century, grabs the first spot. The most iconic among many of their flavours are crema, “boasting a rich, velvety texture and decadent creaminess that distinguishes it from other variations”.
It is followed by Gelateria Badiani which is also in Florence, Italy. It is an acclaimed gelateria with a history of crafting premium gelato. “Their iconic flavour, buontalenti (named after the 16th-century Florentine architect Bernardo Buontalenti, who is said to have invented gelato), is a deliciously creamy custard-based gelato that has won numerous awards,” noted Taste Atlas.
Florence’s Gelateria la Carraia, which boasts a picturesque location by the Arno River, occupied the third spot. “Their standout flavour is ricotta and pear, a perfect balance of creamy ricotta cheese and the fresh sweetness of pear, which provides a unique and decadent gelato experience.”
The list also featured five famous Indian ice cream spots and flavours. They are Mumbai’s K Rustom & Co, Manguluru’s Pabba’s, Mumbai’s Naturals Ice Cream, Mumbai’s Apsara Ice Cream, and Bengaluru’s Corner House.

K Rustom & Co, a renowned ice cream shop in Mumbai, was established in 1953 and is famous for its ice cream sandwiches. Taste Atlas considered its mango flavour the most iconic for its creamy texture and subtle sweetness.
Pabba’s, on the other hand, is known for its vibrant and flavourful creations. Its most iconic offering includes gadbad ice cream, which combines various ice cream flavours, fruits, nuts, and syrups, resulting in a delightful and visually appealing treat.
As for the famed Naturals Ice Cream, its most iconic flavour is tender coconut – “a uniquely tropical treat that uses fresh coconut meat in a creamy ice cream base,” Taste Atlas said.
When it comes to Apsara Ice creams in Mumbai, you must taste their guava flavour. “The guava ice cream is celebrated for its authentic taste, with small chunks of guava fruit and a hint of spice mimicking the way the fruit is traditionally eaten in India,” Taste Atlas said.
Finally, Bengaluru’s acclaimed ice cream shop, Corner House Ice Cream, is one of the most loved dessert destinations in the city. “The most iconic offering at Corner House is the death by chocolate, which is not so much an ice cream flavour as it is an indulgent sundae layered with cake, ice cream, chocolate sauce, nuts, and topped with a cherry.”
