Walnuts are considered healthy for boosting brain health. They are rich in omega-3 fatty acids and also have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. However, does consuming them every morning on an empty stomach help boost memory and even brain function? Nutritionist Pooja Palriwala shared in a post on Instagram that walnuts, indeed, help your brain and memory. “Start your day with a walnut boost! Fuel your brain, sharpen your focus, and boost memory power with this morning ritual,” said Palriwala.

We reached out to experts to analyse the connection between walnuts and brain function.

In studies done on humans, consuming walnuts has been shown to improve cognition, memory, attention, and concentration, noted Dr Sudhir Kumar, consultant neurologist, Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad. “Walnuts are also known to lower the risk of developing dementia, and consuming walnuts slows down the rate of progression from mild cognitive impairment to dementia. Walnut consumption is known to improve mood and reduce the risk of depression. The correct amount is considered to be 5 to 8 pieces of walnuts per day,” said Dr Kumar.

According to him, one should consume walnuts that have been soaked in water overnight, for better absorption. However, if one prefers to consume soaked walnuts during the evenings, it is also acceptable. Though roasted walnuts are tasty, their nutrient content is lower, said Dr Kumar.

What to keep in mind?

Dr Rohini Patil, nutritionist, and founder, Nutracy Lifestyle shared that the possible cognitive benefits of walnuts could be maximised if you are eating on an empty stomach.

*Walnuts have many health advantages, it’s important to eat them in moderation because they’re high in calories and also have fats, and consuming too many might cause weight gain.

*For the best results, choose good-quality walnuts. To reduce your exposure to chemicals and pesticides, think about buying organic walnuts.

*Even though walnuts can be a healthy supplement to a diet rich in other nutrients, this may not be enough to improve memory and brain function. “Eating a range of foods high in nutrients is essential for maintaining general health,” said Dr Patil.
