A contestant on Kaun Banega Crorepati advised host and actor Amitabh Bachchan to consume a concoction of ginger and tulsi juice with honey to relieve sore throat. “Your throat is sore. I can see you are drinking warm water. I will share a home remedy. Ensure to follow it. Bilkul theek ho jayenge (You will feel absolutely fine).

How to make the remedy?

Ingredients

¼ tsp – Ginger juice
¼ tsp – Tulsi juice
¼ tsp – Honey

Method

Mix all and drink.

Bachchan questioned, “Kitne mahine lagenge isko?” (For how many months do I have to follow this remedy?”). The contestant responded, “Mahine nahi, sir! (Not months, sir!)

Taking a cue from their exchange, let’s find out if the remedy works.

Dr GS Tomar, consultant, Pravek Kalp said having ¼ teaspoon of fresh ginger juice, ¼ teaspoon of fresh Tulsi (holy basil) juice, and a teaspoon of honey is a “time-tested remedy” for issues like a sore throat. “This combination harnesses the powerful anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and soothing properties of these natural ingredients,” Dr Tomar told indianexpress.com.

According to Dr Tomar, ginger helps reduce throat irritation and inflammation while tulsi fights bacterial and viral infections, and honey acts as a natural demulcent, coating the throat and relieving discomfort. “This remedy is ideal for those suffering from mild to moderate sore throat, seasonal allergies, or throat irritation due to pollution or excessive vocal cord use,” said Dr Tomar.

The expert added that it is especially beneficial for singers, teachers, and public speakers who frequently strain their vocal cords.

However, certain precautions must be taken. “People with diabetes should use honey in small amounts. Those prone to acidity should monitor ginger intake, as excessive consumption may cause gastric irritation,” said Dr Tomar.

Pregnant women and people on blood-thinning medication should avoid the usage, he cautioned.

“Additionally, ensure the ingredients are fresh and organic for optimal benefits. This natural remedy, taken twice a day, offers a gentle yet effective approach to soothing a sore throat while strengthening overall immunity, making it a valuable addition to daily wellness,” said Dr Tomar.
