Social media serves as a platform to express oneself, but at the same time, it can be hurtful and “mean.” This is something Shark Tank India‘s Vineeta Singh, an investor, personally experienced when she made her debut with the show. “I remember during the first season (of Shark Tank India)…there was this megatrend that I look like Raju ki mummy from 3 Idiots. It got billions and billions of users. It affected me a lot. For two days, I was like, ‘How mean are people?'” Singh recalled in a conversation with Ranveer Allahabadia from 2024.

She added, “I had some of my Shark friends speak to me, and they were like, ‘Listen, those people who are doing it are getting some thrill out of a random thing. Don’t think. Don’t let it get to you. Then, finally, my team convinced me, and I actually made a reel being Raju ki Mummy. After putting it out there and dealing with it, I could come to terms with it.”

Explaining how she dealt with criticism, Singh shared, “The way I nod to my hands being long, all that criticism happens a lot. As a CEO for 15 years, I didn’t get as much criticism as just 2-3 years of fame has brought. Feedback, criticism, people saying things, people disagreeing with your opinion, it hits you. And it takes a while to come to terms with that. I post something and run away. I don’t check comments anymore.”

Clinical psychologist Kamna Chhibber noted that social media can significantly impact an individual’s well-being.

“The content can influence how people think, feel, and respond to situations. What is funny for one can be denigrating to another. It can lead to negative experiences regarding the self or the world and how people are. It can lead to anxiousness or low moods or make one feel irritable and angry. People can infer meanings and interpretations that might not be accurate. At times, the content can be disrespectful or mean towards specific population segments,” said Chhibber.

Therefore, Chhibber noted that it is vital to be mindful of the information that a person consumes.

“Ensuring that one does not spend excessive time on social media is crucial so it does not take away from the other activities one needs to do. Concurrently, it is important to ensure that you don’t over-interpret or over analyse the content reaching you. Distancing yourself from it is alright if you feel it affects you. At the same time, sharing the distress is crucial. So, build adequate support systems around you,” said Chhibber.
