Anees Bazmee reveals how Kajol and Ajay Devgn fell in love while shooting Hulchul: ‘They’re so different yet have a successful marriage’

Bazmee also revealed that he sensed their mutual affection even before they openly expressed it. “I realised that they liked each other without them saying anything about it. I was very happy when they got married,” he said, noting how naturally their love blossomed during their time working together.

Kajol and Ajay’s journey began in the mid-90s when they met on the sets of Hulchul. Despite their contrasting natures—Kajol’s vivacious, outgoing spirit and Ajay’s quiet, introverted demeanour—they formed a close bond that eventually turned into love.

In an interview with Humans of Bombay, Kajol shared how, despite dating other people at one point, both she and Ajay eventually ended their relationships and transitioned into a strong friendship. As she put it:

“I was going out with somebody, I think he was going out with somebody at that point of time. And we did a film together and we kind of became friends from there.”

After dating for four years, the couple tied the knot in 1999 in a traditional Maharashtrian ceremony, attended only by friends and family, that reflected their preference for intimacy over extravagance.

Since then, Kajol and Ajay have built a strong family life, welcoming their daughter, Nysa, and son, Yug. They’ve supported each other through personal and professional highs and lows, proving that a relationship based on trust, respect, and balance can truly stand the test of time.
