This Kanye West-Taylor Swift mash-up tee designed by an Indian-origin artiste is making news for all the right reasons

Kanwer Singh, aka Humble the Poet was hoping to promote peace between the rapper and the singer at the VMAs.

A couple of days back at the VMAs, just minutes before debuting the video for his new song ‘Fade’, Kanye West made an impromptu speech in which he addressed the long-drawn drama between him and singer Taylor Swift. The famous rapper said, “If you think about it, last week there were 22 people murdered in Chicago. People come up to me like, ‘Man, that’s right, take Taylor down,’— Bro, I love all of y’all. That’s why I called her.”

Looks like West is trying hard to spread the love after his wife Kim Kardashian released a recording of the rumoured phone call between him and Swift on Snapchat in July. But he wasn’t the only one hoping to promote peace between the rapper and the singer at the high-profile event. Kanwer Singh, aka Humble the Poet, a Toronto-based schoolteacher and spoken word artiste of Indian-origin was seen wearing a homemade tee that combined an image of Taylor Swift’s ‘1989’ album cover and the banned version of Kanye West’s ‘My Dark Twisted Fantasy’ cover on the front of the T-shirt. The back was emblazoned with the words, ‘Unity is Immunity to Bulls**t’.

According to the caption on Humble the Poet’s Instagram post, he was trying to bring some good energy to the event. Singh shared the photo with the caption: “Unity Is Immunity To Bullish*t?? Just trying to bring some good energy to the event.. Glad it was recognized and appreciated. Special thanks to @thesandylion for helping me with the finer details, and talking me out of using a Taylor’s RED album cover ??” The artiste collaborated with Sandy Gill, a creative consultant just a day before the VMAs. It was worth it as West recognised the effort and wanted to even grab a quick picture with the man wearing this peace-loving tee.

The rapper too shared the photo of the tee on Twitter with the caption: “Unity Love”.

It’s a treat for West-Swift fans, but the sad part is that the shirt is not for sale.

According to a statement in Vogue, Singh said, “It was just made to be a moment. That’s his work; that’s her work on there. I’m an artist, so I’m trying to create new things, not to profit off of other people’s work. Even at that point, I’d used his font, I’d used his album cover, I’d used her album cover . . . I don’t think it would be right for me to make money off of it. I’ve already seen people trying to bootleg it. Some of my work’s been bootlegged before. I guess imitation’s the best form of flattery.”
