Sidharth Malhotra said that to make it in the industry, one doesn't need shortcuts or background, just the will to keep going.

Admitting that he had no “safety net” when he entered the film industry, actor Sidharth Malhotra says, “You don’t need a shortcut or a background to make it.” He has proved this by carving his niche and being lauded for performances in Student of the Year (2012), Ek Villain (2014), Kapoor & Sons (2016), and Shershaah (2021), among others. Sharing that the secret to success is “keep going,” Sidharth — who recently welcomed a baby girl with his wife, Kiara Advani — opened up about his journey, his approach to fitness and fashion, and his latest projects. Read the edited excerpts below:

Q. You are admired for both your intense roles and your romantic boy-next-door image. Which type of roles do you most associate with?

Sidharth Malhotra: I love trying both, but I connect most with roles that have emotional depth. If a character feels real and relatable, whether intense or romantic, I enjoy bringing that honesty to the screen.

Q. Your fashion sense is often in the spotlight. What’s your style mantra?

Sidharth Malhotra: Style starts with the fit. If it complements your physique and makes you feel good, you’re halfway there. I consider the season, the weather, and where I’m headed. Lately, I’ve been enjoying co-ord sets, especially in Mumbai — linen just makes sense. I like subtle textures, easy prints, and experimenting with new silhouettes, without being brand-conscious. Fashion isn’t about the label; it’s about how confidently you carry it. If you feel comfortable and happy in what you’re wearing, that’s real style.

Q. How do you approach fitness and mental health? What does your daily exercise routine entail?

Sidharth Malhotra: Fitness has never been just about the physical grind for me. It’s about balance. Mental health is equally important and is reflected in your body. It begins with a strong foundation at home and among friends, and is reinforced through yoga, breathing, and sports that keep the mind and body in balance. I like to keep my workouts varied — no two days are the same, and that variety keeps me motivated. Diet also plays its part. For me, health is holistic: physical exertion, emotional balance, and diet all working together.

Q. What’s the first thing you do upon waking up?

Sidharth Malhotra: I usually take hot water and ghee.

Q. Which projects are you currently working on, and what can audiences expect next?

Sidharth Malhotra: Right now, I’m excited about VVAN (also starring Tamannaah Bhatia) with Balaji Motion Pictures and TVF. It’s a folk-thriller set deep in the forests of Central India, rich with legends and folklore. It’s very different from anything I’ve done before, and I think people will see a new side of me.

Q. As one of the new faces of Royal Stag, what does “living it large” mean to you personally, and how do you hope to inspire audiences?

Sidharth Malhotra: For me, “living it large” has always been about staying true to who I am and trusting the journey. As an outsider, I had no safety net, just a dream and the drive to work hard. From assisting behind the camera on My Name is Khan to debuting in Student of the Year, every step has been built on perseverance and patience. Whether it was the intensity of Ek Villain, the emotional depth of Kapoor & Sons, or the commitment to Shershaah, the challenges made the milestones all the more meaningful. You don’t need a shortcut or a background to make it — just the will to keep going. That, to me, is what making it large really means.
