‘Cannes’ not miss it! What to expect from the film festival this year

For those glued to the screens to carefully inspect the celebrities that walk down the red carpet, here's a lowdown on what's happening at the festival this year.

Drawing some valiant sartorial choices and many more eyeballs, the 76th edition of the annual Cannes Film Festival kicked off in the south of France on May 16.

For those glued to the screens to carefully inspect the celebrities that walk down the red carpet, here’s a lowdown on what’s happening at the festival this year.

Who’s there: On day 1, actors Sara Ali Khan, Manushi Chhillar, Esha Gupta and former cricketer Anil Kumble were among the Indians who appeared at the festival. Actors Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Anushka Sharma are also set to attend Cannes.

So far:

  • Sara Ali Khan wore an Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla golden embroidered lehenga for the opening day of the event, and told reporters athat she was very proud of her ‘Indianness’.
  • Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting L Murugan led the Indian delegation this year. He wore traditional Tamil attire comprising of a veshti, and a shirt embroidered with the G20. He also wore a scarf with the Indian tricolour emroidered on it.
  • Actor Johny Depp’s film Jeanne Du Barry, a Louis XV period drama, premiered at the film fest on the first day.

FYI: The 76th Cannes Festival opened on May 16 and will go on until May 27 at Palais des Festivals et des Congrès de Cannes at Cannes.

What to watch out for:

  • Anushka Sharma will make her debut appearance at Cannes this year, and will be honouring women in cinema along with Hollywood star Kate Winslet.
  • Anurag Kashyap’s Kennedy and Kanu Bahl’s Agra are part of the Indian films that will be showcased at Cannes.
  • Guneet Mongia, Madhur Bhandarkar, Mrunal Thakur, Aditi Rao Hydari, Vijay Varma, Vignesh Shivan, Niharika NM, Ruhee Dosani, Ranveer Allahbadia and Dolly Singh are attending the event as well.
