Sara Ali Khan made her big Cannes debut on Tuesday by walking the red carpet wearing a lehenga and proudly showing off her “desi” roots. She attended the premiere of the opening film, the Louis XV period drama Jeanne du Barry, starring Johnny Depp, at the 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival.
For the landmark event in her career, Sara opted for a handwoven ivory lehenga designed by celebrity fashion designers Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla. Sara’s appearance from the red carpet is making the rounds on social media where she is seen talking about how she is proud of her “Indianness” and what it means for her to attend such global events.
In an interaction with Brut, Sara first addressed the host by her signature “Hello and namaste.”

On being asked how she is feeling as she makes her Cannes debut, the 27-year-old said, “A little bit nervous. I always aspired to be here someday, I can’t believe I am here.” Sara then explained why she chose to wear a lehenga at Cannes. She said, “It (the outfit) is traditional Indian, handmade work. And I have always been very proud of my ‘Indianness’ and therefore it embodies who I am, I think it is fresh, modern but also traditional Indian.”
