There was no chance to step out of line: Rajnikanth’s daughter

Aishwaryaa Rajinikanth Dhanush on trying to break the stereotype of being a star kid in her debut book Standing on an Apple Box.

Aishwaryaa Rajinikanth Dhanush, Rajinikanth, Dhanush, Aishwaryaa, Standing on an Apple Box, Harper Collins, celebrity child, news, latest news, India news, national news “It was just that she didn’t have a CCTV camera, but it was like that all the time,” said Aishwaryaa Rajinikanth Dhanush.

The apple box is an integral piece of equipment on a film set. Available in various sizes, the apple box can be used to level equipment, to make short actors look tall and even as a tray to serve tea and snacks. In this context, Standing on an Apple Box (Harper Collins, Rs 260) is a book by Aishwaryaa Rajinikanth Dhanush (daughter of Rajinikanth and director of the film 3 that stars her husband Dhanush) where she reinstates the “normal” of being a celebrity child.

In Delhi for the promotion of of her book last week, Aishwaryaa said, “The book was not planned at all. I used to write when I was a kid. It was an integral part of my development and starting again was a spontaneous decision. Through the years, writing took a backseat. I got married and then kids, work and production happened. But I got into the flow and naturally picked a topic that was close to my heart and that’s how Standing on an Apple Box happened.”

In the book, the author identifies herself as an introvert and her sister Soundarya the extrovert, but Aishwaryaa added that in no way is this book an autobiography, “Everything I have conveyed in the book is what I have wanted to tell people. This is not an autobiography. These are just threads out of my memory. People generally have these notions and misconceptions about celebrity kids, there’s a lot of speculation about why we behave and talk the way we do and that we have it all pretty sorted. I wanted to break those stereotypes and show that we have the same feelings and emotions, we go wrong and we are not perfect,” said Aishwaryaa.

In the book, Aishwaryaa has described her first experience at a night club on a new years’ eve, also the eve of her birthday. She recalls how all that she wanted on her 18th birthday was to go to a real new year’s party at a night club and her father, finally, conceded. So she went to the discotheque, but with her parents and extended family in tow. They hung around for 15 minutes until the clock struck 12 and returned soon after. “I think my parents lucked out since I’m not rebellious by nature. Besides, I wasn’t really given much of a choice. It was either this or nothing. My mother ran quite a tight household and there was no chance to step out of line. I studied in my mum’s school and was around her a lot. It was just that she didn’t have a CCTV camera, but it was like that all the time,” said Aishwaryaa, who adds that she has a tough time keeping her two sons grounded.

“I keep telling my mother that I have a greater challenge. There’s so much social media and kids know so much. They are taught to think and question and we have to rationalise with them. I don’t want them to go into cinema by default, I want them to know that they have other options.” says Aishwaryaa, 34, who adds that she sees a lot of personality traits of her father in her husband Dhanush. “That’s something which told me that it would work out. I think we should give it to him more than me. It wasn’t easy to take the plunge at such a young age, knowing the kind of father-in-law he would have and the challenge there would be to make a name for himself. He’s really made all of us proud and proved it to people who thought otherwise,” she said.
