Karur stampede: Actor Vijay’s TVK moves Supreme Court seeking an independent probe into the September 27 tragedy
The Supreme Court said it will take up the petition when another plea by the father of a Karur stampede victim, challenging the Madras High Court's refusal to transfer the investigation to CBI, is also listed for hearing.

The Supreme Court is likely to hear a plea by Tamil actor Joseph Vijay’s political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), on Friday against the Madras High Court’s direction setting up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the September 27 Karur stampede, which killed 41 people.
The counsel for the TVK mentioned it before Chief Justice of India B R Gavai, seeking urgent listing.
The court said it will take up the petition on October 10, when another plea by the father of a Karur stampede victim challenging the High Court’s refusal to transfer the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is also listed for hearing.
The plea challenges the October 3 order of a single judge of the Madras High Court directing an investigation by an SIT headed by Asra Garg, Inspector General of Police (North Zone), into the Karur stampede.
The High Court also criticised the conduct of Vijay, the organisers of the event and the members of the political party for “fleeing from the scene of occurrence immediately after mishaps”.
“While this Court is aware that the political party has not been arrayed as a respondent, it is important to point out that it is incumbent upon such a party to have taken immediate steps to rescue and assist individuals caught in the stampede like situation arising from the massive crowd in which many children, women, and several young person tragically lost their lives,” the court said.
“Regrettably, there has been no statement, no expression of responsibility from the political party viz., Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam regarding the occurrence, either in their official Twitter account or on other social media, regretting the stampede that has taken place. There is no communication in any form or in any manner regretting the incident. This omission reflects the political party’s disregard for human life and public accountability.”
The single judge’s order came a few hours after a Division Bench of the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court rejected a plea to order a CBI probe into the Karur stampede.
