Conditions are favourable for further advance of southwest monsoon into some more parts of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana and Punjab during the next two days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in its latest forecast at 8 am Tuesday. This came as the weather agency has issued an alert for heavy rainfall in most parts of the country.
Meanwhile, nearly two weeks of relatively good rainfall over many parts of the country has significantly reduced the monsoon deficit for June. However, as of now, Northwest India is the only region that has received better than expected rainfall.
In Himachal Pradesh, over 300 roads have been blocked amid incessant rains, as per the Public Works Department minister.“The state government has identified over 350 vulnerable hot spots in the state which are landslide prone” news agency ANI reported. A rain warning has also been issued for Sirmaur, Solan, Hamirpur, Bilaspur, Una, Mandi, Kangra and some parts of the Kullu district for Tuesday. Meanwhile, the Chandigarh-Manali national highway was restored for traffic on Monday night after remaining closed for almost 24 hours owing to landslides and flash floods, news agency PTI reported. Commuters were stranded in Mandi as the highway was blocked since Sunday evening.
As the state witnessed torrential rains in past few days, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Tuesday said the National Disaster Relief Force and Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force have been instructed to remain on "alert mode" in case of a natural disaster, news agency ANI reported.
Meanwhile, the Char Dham Yatra has been halted due to bad weather en route to Kedarnath and Badrinath.
In its latest forecast on Tuesday, the IMD issued a ‘heavy rainfall alert’ for Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Pithoragarh, Rudraprayag and Bageshwar districts of the state.

Amid an orange alert indicating heavy to very heavy rainfall sounded by India Meteorological Department IMD, Mumbai, Thane and Palghar are bracing for heavy showers on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) bulletin forecasted moderate rain in the city and suburbs with possibility of heavy rain at isolated places.
Between 8 am on Monday and 8 am on Tuesday, the eastern suburbs recorded maximum rain at 63 mm, followed by 60 mm in the western suburbs and 34 mm in the island city.
Meanwhile, the IMD has issued an orange alert for Pune and its surrounding ghat regions for 48 hours. An orange alert indicates the probability of heavy (64.5 mm-115.5 mm of rainfall in 24 hours) to very heavy (115.5-204.5 mm of rainfall in 24 hours) rainfall.
A low pressure area over Odisha and adjoining areas of Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh has being resulting in some rainfall in that region in the last two days. The IMD expects this spell of rainfall to continue for about four to five days. Other parts of the country are also expected to continue getting some rainfall till the end of this month at least. In the last two days, rainfall has picked up in every region, though many individual states and districts are still very dry.
Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely over Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh during the next five days. Isolated heavy rainfall is also likely over parts of east India on June 27.
However, despite Assam is facing a flood-like situation, eastern India has a 23 per cent deficiency, with Bihar and Jharkhand among the driest states in the country as of now. Bihar has received just 22 per cent of its normal rainfall, while Jharkhand has got 36 per cent.
