The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that heatwave conditions have abated from Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, north Rajasthan and many parts of Uttar Pradesh today due to a western disturbance. It has also predicted, in what could come as a huge relief, that the sizzling Delhi-NCR would receive light to moderate intensity rainfall. The weather conditions have been difficult to endure and have become fatal as heatwave has gripped most parts of the country. According to the Union health ministry, there have been 110 confirmed heatstroke deaths in the country since March – six of which were recorded last Tuesday. Moreover, there have been 40,272 cases of heatstroke this summer, health ministry data showed. The IMD has predicted that the average June rainfall for the country as a whole is most likely to be below normal, less than 92 per cent of the Long Period Average (LPA). The LPA of the June rainfall as a whole for the period 1971-2020 stands at 16.69 cm.
