A 57-year-old resort owner was killed and two staffers injured after an SUV rammed into the resort’s premises in North Goa’s Vagator on Saturday night, police said.
Police have arrested the accused SUV driver and booked him under sections of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
According to the police, the incident took place around 8.30 pm Saturday when the resort owner, Remedia Mary Albuquerque (57), was attending a phone call at the reception area.
Police said the accused driver, Sachin Kurup (42), who hails from Pune, had gone to the resort to pick up a friend. According to the police, he was driving towards the parking area near the guest house when he claimed to have lost control of the vehicle.
Police have recovered purported CCTV footage that shows the SUV ramming into the victims.
A police officer said, “The SUV barged into the resort and hit a woman and two workers near the reception counter. The woman was declared dead on arrival at a hospital in Mapusa. The two staffers, Shiv Dindo and Rupa Paras, were rushed to a hospital and are stable. During questioning, the driver said he lost control of the car while parking.”
“We are investigating allegations of drunk driving. A medical report is awaited. The accused driver was immediately arrested and an FIR was registered under section 304 of Indian Penal Code. He was produced in a court and sent to police custody for four days,” the officer said.
The accused has been working in Goa for over a decade in the event management sector, said police.
