After a video came to light showing an agitated policeman in Madhya Pradesh tearing up his uniform following an argument with a BJP leader, police have said the incident is from eight months ago, and a probe has been ordered into how the CCTV footage was leaked.

The CCTV footage, from Singrauli district, came to light on Monday. It purportedly shows an Assistant Sub-Inspector tearing open his clothes after a BJP leader allegedly threatens to strip him of his uniform in front of other officials. Also in the room are senior officers and municipal officials.

The police said the video is around eight months old and the incident took place at Singrauli district’s Kotwali police station.

In the video, the ASI gets off his chair in a fit of rage and starts to take his clothes off. Despite efforts to calm him down, he remains inconsolable and continues to shun his uniform.

Police said the dispute took place over the construction of a drain in Kotwali area. The ASI had a heated argument with local residents, following which municipal officials and police officers arrived to resolve the issue.

The state Congress unit uploaded the clip on its official X handle, saying, “The level of policing in the state has become zero. Crimes are uncontrolled, criminals are fearless and the police are helpless at some places and under pressure at other places.”

Superintendent of Police Nivedita Gupta said action had been taken against the ASI. “This is an eight month old video. I had also given punishment to (the ASI). The two parties had a fight over some land-related dispute… a drain in the area. But since the officer had insulted the uniform, I punished him. If the police don’t respect the uniform, who will?” the SP said.

Gupta said an investigation has been ordered into the leak of the CCTV footage. “We are investigating why, after eight months, this video was leaked and whether there was a blackmailing angle behind this,” she said.
