Three days after he was stabbed by his schoolmate, a class 10 student in Udaipur died on Monday while undergoing treatment.
The stabbing incident had caused communal tensions in Udaipur, and the death of the boy has put the city further on edge. The district administration has extended the suspension of mobile internet services in Udaipur and nearby areas for 24 hours.
The student was admitted to a government hospital following the stabbing incident on Friday. During protests against the incident, a mob had set ablaze some vehicles and vandalised shops.
On Saturday, local authorities demolished the rented house that the 15-year-old accused and his family were living in, saying that it “encroached” on forest land.
On Monday, the sisters of the boy who was stabbed had tied a rakhi on his wrist on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan while he was undergoing treatment at hospital. However, in the evening, he succumbed to his injuries.
Following his death, the district administration deployed additional forces around the hospital. Udaipur Zone IG Ajay Pal Lamba appealed to people to maintain peace, and law and order. He said the case has been taken under the Case Officer Scheme – under which officers are designated for obtaining orders from court in a particular case – for its speedy conclusion.
Meanwhile, alleging lapses in the child’s treatment, the Congress party constituted a four-member fact finding committee under Lok Sabha MP Bhajan Lal Jatav. Congress state president Govind Singh Dotasra said the student’s family should be given at least Rs 50 lakh financial assistance, apart from two government jobs for his relatives and strict action against the guilty.
