Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi Saturday and apprised him of various ongoing development works in Tripura as well as future plans, besides discussing important issues including a host of international connectivity projects in the pipeline, a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office said Sunday.

The projects discussed include air connectivity with Bangladesh, the Agartala-Akhaura rail link project, commencement of services on the Bharat-Bangla Maitri Setu, and highway infrastructure. Among these, air connectivity with Bangladesh is expected to begin later this month with an Agartala-Chittagong flight. However, details of the debut journey are yet to be announced. The Agartala-Akhaura rail project, which has already crossed at least three deadlines, is expected to be commissioned by the end of this year.

Tripura, which is a landlocked state with Bangladesh on three sides, shares an 856-km-long international border with the neighbouring country. Connectivity with Bangladesh is expected to give a strategic advantage to the state in terms of trade, transport and industrialisation.

The chief minister also sought PM Modi’s support for future development initiatives in the state and wished him in advance for his birthday which falls on September 17, Sunday.

Later, Dr Manik Saha took to X and wrote, “Extremely honoured to have met Pradhan Sevak of Bharat Adaraniya Shri Narendra Modi Ji in New Delhi today. Congratulated the Hon’ble PM for successfully holding the G20 Presidency & also received his guidance for the overall development of Tripura. His encouragement have always been the guiding light for me, in delivering good governance up to the last mile in society.”

Sources in the Chief Minister’s Office said PM Modi expressed his “satisfaction” on the BJP’s win in the bypolls in Dhanpur and Boxanagar Assembly constituencies earlier this month.

Saha is also also learnt to have informed the PM that his government has made “remarkable progress” in various sectors including education, healthcare, infrastructure, and economic growth, all of which have positively impacted the lives of citizens in the state. The discussions included work done in the field of economic development, investment opportunities, agriculture, healthcare, and environmental conservation, the statement said.

The chief minister also informed PM Modi that a slew of steps had been taken to attract investment in the state’s industrial sector and said investors are now showing keen interest in Tripura, claiming that the BJP-led government has fostered an “industry-friendly atmosphere”.

Saha’s visit came after the BJP, which was ruling the state with a thin simple majority of 31 MLAs in the 60-member state Assembly, boosted its prospects with two more seats, including Boxanagar which it wrested from the Left. The CPI(M) had been winning the seat for nearly three decades. With this, the BJP’s tally in the House has risen to 33.
