After Tripura Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury demanded the government arrange for the reinstallation of former deputy chief minister Baidyanath Majumder’s statue vandalised after the 2018 Assembly polls, Social Welfare Minister Tinku Roy attributed the vandalism to an “outburst of people’s resentment” against Left Front rule.
However, he offered to extend cooperation if the CPM wants to install its late leader’s statue in front of its party office.
“The statue of former deputy chief minister Baidyanath Majumder was vandalised in 2018 and it was alleged to be done by the BJP. This is propaganda. It is because the 2018 movement was a movement of the people. After 25 years of misrule of the communists… vandalisation of many statues and violence happened at many places owing to an outburst of people’s resentment. But I don’t know who did it,” the minister said on Monday.
Roy further said many people demanded that the remains of the statue be removed. “Many people came to me with a request to get it removed because at least 20 accidents occurred there in the past two years as there is no statue or light. Only the broken remains are there,” he added.
“A statue of Lord Rama was installed two days ago. We cannot say who did this. I have met many communist leaders of Kailashahar during several meetings but never heard them talking about the reinstallation of the statue of the former deputy CM. If they desire to reinstall the statue in front of their party office, we will cooperate,” he said.
In a letter written to Chief Minister Manik Saha, Chaudhury wrote that an idol of Lord Rama was on April 11 installed at the Srirampur trijunction of the Chandipur RD block in Unakoti district’s Kailashahar town in place of the vandalised statue. The CPM leader further demanded the government arrange for the reinstallation of Majumder’s statue in the same place and relocate the Lord Rama idol at a genuine place with full dignity. The statue was installed in 2012.
