Three tourists were killed after a car driven by a Russian citizen allegedly rammed into them in north Goa’s Arpora in the early hours of Saturday, police said, adding that the latter is undergoing treatment after suffering injuries.
The police identified the deceased as Dilipkumar Bang, Manojkumar Soni, both from Hyderabad, and Mahesh Sharma from Nashik in Maharashtra.
According to the police, the incident took place around 3 am, when the three men were crossing the road and going towards their car, which was parked across the street.
“As they were crossing, the accused rammed his car into them. After the collision, the car driven by the accused fell into a nullah. The accused suffered injuries and is undergoing treatment at Goa Medical College. His statement is yet to be recorded,” said a police officer.
The police said the victims, in their 40s, came to Goa on Friday for a holiday and were staying in Calangute. “The victims had known each other for decades and were business associates. The postmortem was conducted and the bodies have been handed over to the families,” the officer said.
An FIR has been registered against the car driver, Anton Bychkov (27), under sections 304 (culpable homicide), 279 (rash driving) and 334 (voluntarily causing hurt on provocation) of the Indian Penal Code at the Anjuna police station. “We have also booked the car’s owner, who had rented the car to the accused, under the Motor Vehicles Act,” a police officer said.
