Three men who tried to stop a group of drunk men from ransacking a dhaba in Chhattisgarh’s Dhamtari district were stabbed to death late Monday night.

The incident took place outside Annapurna Dhaba in Bhoyna village, around 78 kilometres from the state capital Raipur.

“A group was ransacking the place, throwing tables around in an inebriated condition. The men, Alok Singh Thakur, Nitin Tandi and Suresh Hiyal, and their friends were having food,” said a police official from Arjuni police station.

“The men tried to stop the group, but the accused attacked them with a knife. The prime accused, identified as Gopi Diwan (20), was carrying the weapon, and he allegedly stabbed the three men. One of the victims tried to run away but was chased and attacked by Diwan. All three died on the spot. Once police received information, we swung into action and caught all the suspects. We also seized the murder weapon,” the official said.

“Eight persons, including three minors, were detained after the incident. The five adults, including Diwan, have been arrested and sent to judicial custody. We are finding out if they have a prior criminal record,” said Superintendent of Police, Dhamtari, Suraj Singh. The three minors have been sent to a correctional home.

Police have invoked sections of murder and unlawful assembly of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
