Cyclone Fengal Highlights: Cyclone Fengal likely to hit Tamil Nadu today, schools and colleges shut in Chennai

The IMD has issued flash flood warnings in the watersheds and neighbourhoods of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the deep depression over southwest Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm on Wednesday. Once intensified, the storm, identified as cyclone Fengal, will bring heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Pudukkottai districts, whereas extremely heavy rain at one or two places in Cuddalore and Mayiladuthurai districts.

In view of the rains, authorities have declared a holiday for schools and colleges in several regions, including Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Tiruchirappalli, and Tiruvarur. As per an ANI report, the IMD has also issued flash flood warnings in the watersheds and neighbourhoods of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. NDRF teams have been deployed in Karaikkal, Tiruvarur, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, and Mayiladuthurai, Thanjavur, according to the IMD release.

What’s happening in Chennai? Due to the rains, heavy traffic congestion was witnessed in many areas, including the arterial OMR Road, and traffic flow was affected in several areas as roads came under sheets of water. Also, in Chennai, there was a delay in the landing of seven flights. State-run dairy Aavin said it has taken all steps to ensure unhindered milk supply to the people and announced that eight of its parlours here will be open 24 x 7.

IndiGo, India's largest airline by market share, has issued travel advisory for flight disruptions to and from Chennai, Tuticorin, Madurai due to adverse weather conditions.

These locations continue to be face the impact of adverse weather conditions.

The airline also hoped for a swift recovery from the ongoing challenges, thanking passengers for their understanding.

Cyclone Fengal, Tamil Nadu Rains Live Updates: Rain brings holiday for schoolgoes

According to IMD's rainfall update, very heavy rainfall was recorded in several areas, including Nagapattinam (19 cm) and Chennai (13 cm), from 8.30 am on November 26 until 8.30 am the following day.

Also, there was widespread heavy rainfall, including in the delta areas, and the rest of the state experienced mild to moderate showers. NDRF and state teams have been deployed in delta districts and Chennai as well.

Given the rains, November 27 has been declared a holiday for schools and colleges, including Tiruvarur, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, and Mayiladuthurai districts. A holiday has been declared only for schools in Chennai, Chengelpet, Ariyalur, and Kanchipuram.

According to the IMD's bulletin, the deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal is about 370 km southeast of Nagapattinam and 550 km south-southeast of Chennai.

Cyclone Fengal, Tamil Nadu Rains Live Updates: Ministers, officials inspect relief camps, submerged crops

Farmers leader P R Pandian alleged that canals and rivers were not properly desilted in the delta areas.

Minister TRB Rajaa inspected relief camps at Thiruthuraipoondi and also the submerged crops in that region.

District officials inspected the affected localities and senior state officials coordinated rain-related relief work.

Rain-related incidents, including the collapse of an old house at Tarangampadi and the wall of a Dharga's tank at Jambuvanodai in Tiruvarur district have been reported.

Trees were uprooted and some fell on nearby electricity poles causing power failure and many localities were inundated.

Cyclone Fengal, Tamil Nadu Rains Live Updates: Rains continue in Tamil Nadu, standing crops hit in Cauvery delta areas

Rains continued on Wednesday in Tamil Nadu's Cauvery delta areas affecting standing paddy crops, and leader of the opposition Edappadi K Palaniswami urged the state government to provide appropriate relief to farmers.

Crops were submerged partially and completely at several places, including those in and around Tiruvarur, Thiruthuraipoondi, Muthupettai, Mayiladuthurai, and Vedaranyam, and according to farmers' rough estimates, crops on at least 2,000 acres were affected.

Also, huge acreage of salt pans in the districts of Nagapattinam (Vedaranyam) and Villupuram (Marakkanman) came under water.

AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami expressed shock over reports that 1,500 acres of paddy crop have been affected in Thiruthuraipoondi (Tiruvarur district) and demanded that officials inspect rain-hit areas and urged the DMK regime to provide appropriate relief to farmers.

Rough to very rough sea conditions prevailed over southwest Bay of Bengal, and along and off the Sri Lanka coast till Wednesday morning.

It is likely to become high from today evening till 29th November, and improve thereafter becoming very rough to rough on 30th November, according to the IMD forecast.

Rough sea conditions are also likely to prevail over adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal beginning today evening, and will remain so till 30th November, the forecast stated.

Residents across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and south Andhra Pradesh have been advised to check for traffic congestion on their route before leaving for their destination, in view of waterlogging and localised flooding of roads due to heavy rains, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated.

They have also been asked to:

• Follow any traffic advisories that are issued in this regard.

• Avoid going to areas that face the water logging problems often.

• Special care may be taken for fishing ponds and poultries over coastal areas.

• Avoid staying in vulnerable structure.

Cyclone Fengal, Tamil Nadu Rains Live Updates: Waterlogging likely in low-lying areas of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, south Andhra Pradesh

As flash flood warnings are in place in the watersheds and neighbourhoods of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, localised flooding of roads and waterlogging in low-lying areas have been predicted by the weather agency in these states, along with south Andhra Pradesh.

Underpasses may also be closed mainly in urban areas of these regions. Heavy rainfall could also possibly cause occasional reduction in visibility, disrupt traffic in major cities, and cause minor damages to kutcha roads, horticulture and standing crops in some areas due to inundation, the IMD has warned.

Light to moderate rainfall at many places with heavy rainfall at isolated places is likely on Wednesday in coastal Andhra Pradesh, which will intensify into heavy to very heavy rainfall between 28th and 30th November, the IMD stated in its release.

Rough to very rough Sea condition is very likely to prevail along and off Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and south Andhra Pradesh coasts till 30th November, the release alerted. It also warned fishermen against venturing into adjoining areas of Westcentral Bay of Bengal and along & off south Andhra Pradesh coast over the next four days.

The fishermen have been asked to return to the coasts immediately.

Tamil Nadu Rains Live Updates: NDRF deploys teams in view of rain alert in Tamil Nadu

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been dispatched to some coastal districts of Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory of Pondicherry given the prediction of heavy rainfall from November 26 to November 28.

For each of the districts of Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, Nagappatinam and Cuddalore, two teams -- -one from NDRF and the other from the State -- have been dispatched. First-responders and volunteers are also ready for deployment.

Minister for Revenue and Disaster Management, KKSSR Ramachandran, Chief Secretary N Muruganandam and top state officials participated in the meeting chaired by Chief Minister M K Stalin.
