Cyclone Fengal, Tamil Nadu Chennai Weather Forecast Today LIVE Updates: With Tamil Nadu bracing for the landfall of Cyclone Fengal, the India Meteorological Department said that the cyclone is likely to make landfall on November 30 (afternoon) close to Puducherry with a wind speed, gusting to 90 kmph.  The deep depression over the Southwest Bay of Bengal intensified into a cyclonic storm on Friday afternoon, IMD said. It has also issued a red alert for Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Puducherry, and Karaikal.

Schools closed: Owing to adverse weather conditions, schools in Chennai and Chengalpattu districts have been declared closed on Friday, according to news agency PTI. Additionally, the Puducherry government, too, announced that all schools and colleges in the union territory will remain closed till Saturday.

What is the IMD saying? The met department has stated that the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal is “very likely” to cross the coast as a depression on Saturday between Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The system is expected to bring wind speeds of 45-55 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 65 kmph, potentially exacerbating the impact of the heavy rains.

Tamil Nadu Chennai Rains Live: Tamil Nadu govt declares public holiday on Nov 30

The Tamil Nadu government on Friday appealed to people to stay indoors and declared November 30 a holiday for educational institutions and IT companies were requested to allow employees to work from home. Public transport has been suspended on the East Coast Road and Old Mahabalipuram Road here, which is close to the shoreline, on Saturday afternoon.

Minister for Revenue and Disaster Management KKSSR Ramachandran held a meeting at the state emergency operations centre here with senior officials to review preparatory and relief measures.

An official release said, "Tamil Nadu State Disaster Management Authority urges the general public to avoid visiting beaches, amusement parks and attending recreational events. The general public is requested to cooperate fully with the disaster prevention measures taken by the Government of Tamil Nadu."

The India Meteorological Department has issued heavy rainfall warnings in the following places -- isolated heavy to very heavy rain with extremely heavy rain at one or two places is likely to occur over Chengalpattu, Villuppuram, Cuddalore districts and Puducherry.

IMD also predicted that isolated heavy to very heavy rain with extremely heavy rain is likely to occur over Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Villuppuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore districts and Puducherry on November 30.

According to an IMD update (8.40 pm on Friday), Fengal was about 240 km east-northeast of Nagappattinam, 230 km east-southeast of Puducherry and 250 km southeast of Chennai, PTI news agency reported.

The deep depression over the Southwest Bay of Bengal remained practically stationary about 100 km east-northeast of Trincomalee and it will intensify into a cyclonic storm in the next 12 hours, the Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai, said on Thursday.

It would move nearly north-northwestwards, skirting Sri Lanka coast and intensify into a cyclonic storm during the next 12 hours, the RMC said in its latest bulletin.

"To cross the north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram around the morning of November 30, as a deep depression with a wind speed of 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph," it said.

Tamil Nadu and Puducherry braced for very heavy rain with the possibility of Cyclone Fengal crossing the coasts near Chennai.
