After Sabarimala, Guruvayur temple at the centre of ‘gold theft’ row as BJP demands central agency probe

The Sabarimala gold theft case pertains to allegations of “missing” gold from the Dwarapalaka idols and door frames at the temple’s sanctum sanctorum.

A report from the temple vigilance and chief security officer found that Unnikrishnan Potty, who had sponsored gold-plating of temple items, failed to return 474.9 grams of gold to the TDB after gold-plating the idols and door frames in 2019.

An Special Investigation Team (SIT), which is probing the case, registered two cases of theft, conspiracy and criminal breach of trust against Potty, former members of the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) of 2019, and several officials. Potty, who is now in custody, was named the key accused in both.

Speaking to ANI, Chandrasekhar added: “President Droupadi Murmu is visiting Kerala for four days. During her visit, she will visit the Sabarimala temple to seek blessings. We informed her about the shocking events unfolding in Sabrimala. The President was very shocked to hear this….Devasom board is converted into an organisation of brokers. God only knows how many years and how much loot both the Congress and CPM have done.”
