Two children have died due to measles in Uri sector of Baramulla district in Jammu and Kashmir even as 16 new confirmed cases have been reported so far,officials said.
A six-month-old baby girl died due to measles in Churunda area of Uri,120 kms from here,last evening as she could not be taken to the Sub-district hospital on time,the officials said.
The other victim is a three-year-old Rafiq Ahmad,who died due to measles a few days earlier.
A team of doctors and paramedical staff has been rushed to Churunda,Tigawadi,Bradgran and Thajal villages of Uri area which have been worst affected,Chief Medical officer Baramulla Dr Mohammad Shafi Saraf said.
The team on Friday checked 95 suspected cases of measles,out of which 16 cases were confirmed,Saraf said.
He said the health department officials have started a vaccination drive in the area to control the outbreak.
Local residents alleged that the vaccination programme for the new borns and children up to the age of five years was not being carried out properly.
“Our villages are located very close to the Line of Control and very often the health officials do not come for vaccination in these areas,” Nazir Ahmad,who had brought his son to the hospital,alleged.
