New measures to curb declining sex ratio in UP

UP govt has proposed new measures to curb cases of female foeticide to improve the declining sex ratio in the state.

Alarmed by significant decline in state’s sex ratio in Census 2011,the state government has proposed new measures to curb cases of female foeticide.

In a high-level meeting with top health officials here today,Principal Secretary (Medical and Health) Neeta Chaudhary directed them to take all possible steps to curb pre-natal sex determination at ultrasound centres.

She also instructed them to take stern actions against the ultrasound centres if found guilty.

Notably,the sex ratio among children of the age-group between 0-6 years in the state has seen a drastic decline as per the Census 2011 data which revealed that the ratio has declined to 899 per thousand compared to 916 in previous census in 2001.

Situation is particularly grim in western UP,including developed NCR cities of Ghaziabad (850) and Gautam Buddha Nagar (845),apart from Meerut (850),Bulandshahr (844) and Baghpat (837).
