Suspected Maoists killed a 15-year-old boy in Orissa’s Mayurbhanj district bordering West Bengal on Thursday night on the suspicion that he was a police informer.
The body of Sukanta Murmu, with his throat slit was found lying outside his house in Handibhanga village under Suliapada police station of Maoist-infested Mayurbhanj district this morning. This is the first time in Orissa that the extremists have targeted such a young boy. The killing took place a day after chief minister Naveen Patnaik requested the Centre to include Mayurbhanj among the district eligible for grant of funds under Security Related Expenditure.
Suliapada police officials said a group of 30 Maoists swooped down on Handibhanga,a few km away from the borders of West Midnapore district of West Bengal at about 1.30 am today. The Maoists first searched for Murmu’s father as they suspected hm to be a police informer. When they did not find him they ordered all the family members to go inside and picked up the young Murmu. They thrashed him, tied his hands backwards and then slit his throat, said Suliapada officer-in-charge AC Patra. However,no Maoist posters were found near the spot.
The Maoists then attacked the house of Ramachandra Marandi,a home guard, staying in the same village. Police said the Maoists were angry with Marandi over passing information about their activities. However,Marandi was away in Baripada. Angry at not finding the homeguard, the Maoists looted valuables from his house before setting it on fire. The extremists are reported to have sneaked to neighbouring West Midnapore district after committing the heinous act.
Suliapada police have started investigation into the matter.
