The Jammu and Kashmir government on Monday said Jammu — the winter capital of the state — has 135 liquor shops,the highest in the state,and Kashmir has a total of 257 liquor shops and bars.
In a written reply to a question in Legislative Assembly on Monday,J&K Finance Minister Abdul Rahim Rather said Jammu has the highest number of 135 liquor shops in the state.
There are a total of 257 liquor shops and bars in Jammu and Kashmir,he said,adding the highest number is in Jammu.
It is followed by 26 liquor selling units in Leh,21 in Udhampur,20 in Kathua,12 in Srinagar,10 in Samba,9 in Rajouri,7 in Reasi,six each in Doda and Ramban districts,four in Poonch and only one in Kishtwar.
Jammu and Kashmir liked the consumption of more ‘Desi Whiskey’ than Indian Made Foreign Liquor and beer,as per the official figures revealed by the State Excise department up to end of February,2011.
As many as 397.35 lakh bottles of IMFL,beer and Desi Whiskey were sold to consumers in Jammu and Kashmir.
Of these,highest number of 171.08 lakh bottles of Desi whiskey were sold to consumers as against the 127.16 lakh bottles of beer and 99.01 lakh bottles of IMFL,the data revealed.
During the 11 months of this financial years,15.62 and 90.69 lakh more bottles of liqour were consumed,respectively as against 381.73 lakh bottles and 306.66 lakh bottles in 2009-10 and 2008-09,respectively.
